High Pressure Transmitter up to 70,000 psi: Inside the Compact P22

High Pressure Transmitter up to 70,000 psi: Inside the Compact P22

On a waterjet cutting table, the pump behind the nozzle can hold tens of thousands of psi for an entire shift. In a hydraulic circuit, pressure may climb, hold and release thousands of times a day. In both cases, the machine's controller relies on one small component to report what is happening inside the system: the high pressure transmitter. The Paquin P22 High Pressure Transmitter was developed for exactly this kind of duty. It measures up to 70,000 psi in a compact, welded stainless-steel package that suits OEM designs and budgets.

Why extreme pressure is hard on sensors and on budgets

As operating pressure rises, the demands on a pressure sensor multiply. The sensing element must stay accurate under enormous mechanical load. The housing and process connection must contain that pressure safely, and the output must remain stable through repeated cycling and changing temperatures.

Many sensors that meet those requirements were designed for laboratory or process-plant installations. As a result, they tend to be large, heavy and priced accordingly. For an OEM building machines in volume, that creates a difficult trade-off. A premium sensor can strain the bill of materials, while an under-specified one can lead to drift, early failures and warranty claims. The P22 was developed to eliminate that compromise.

Inside the P22 high pressure transmitter

Several design choices allow the P22 to deliver high pressure performance in an OEM-friendly format.

  • Elastic foil strain gauge sensing. The P22 measures pressure with an elastic foil strain gauge design, intended to monitor accurately in extreme high pressure applications.
  • Welded stainless-steel construction. The sensor, process connection and housing are all stainless steel, and the process port is sealed with an FKM o-ring.
  • Ten standard ranges, plus custom. Standard ranges run from 0–6,000 psi to 0–70,000 psi. If your application sits between them, Paquin can build a custom range.
  • Built-in headroom. Every standard range carries an overpressure rating of 125% of full scale and a burst rating of 150%.
  • Consistent accuracy. Accuracy is ±0.5% FS as standard, or ±0.25% FS as an option, with long-term stability of ±0.15% FS per year.
  • Small and light. At 120–150 g, the P22 fits tight machine envelopes and adds very little weight to moving assemblies.

Choosing a pressure range with headroom

When you specify a high pressure transmitter, the range deserves careful thought. Selecting a range far above normal operating pressure reduces the useful resolution of the signal. Selecting one too close to it gives the signal no room to absorb the pressure spikes that hydraulic valves and high pressure pumps routinely produce.

Because the P22 offers ten standard steps between 6,000 and 70,000 psi, most applications can use a range close to their normal working pressure. The overpressure and burst ratings then provide a safety margin above it. For example, the 0–40,000 psi version is rated for 50,000 psi overpressure and 60,000 psi burst. If a standard step would still leave you oversized, a custom range such as 0–55,000 psi is available.

Applications

The P22 is used across a wide variety of high pressure equipment, including:

  • Hydraulic circuits
  • High pressure waterjet cutting equipment
  • High pressure jet stream systems
  • Compressors
  • CNC machines
  • Systems handling liquids, gases and chemicals

Specifying and ordering your P22

Every P22 is configured to order. Your specification covers the pressure range, accuracy class, operating temperature range, process connection (G1/2" male or M20 x 1.5) and electrical connection (a DIN 43650-A connector or shielded cable from 0.5 to 10 meters). Matching DIN 43650-A connector assemblies, both field-wireable and pre-wired with cable lengths up to 20 meters, can be added as separate line items.
