Flush Mount Pressure Transmitter for Viscous and Hot Media to 482°F: The P13

Flush Mount Pressure Transmitter for Viscous and Hot Media to 482°F: The P13

On an adhesive dispensing line, a pressure transmitter watches the feed pressure to every nozzle. At the end of a shift, the line stops and the adhesive sitting in the transmitter's pressure port begins to cure. By the next morning, the port is partly blocked, the reading has drifted, and someone has to remove the sensor and clean it out. Paint lines, sludge pumps and food processing equipment see versions of the same problem. The Paquin P13 Flush Mount Pressure Transmitter was designed to prevent it. It has a flush 316L stainless sensing face, with no hollow port for media to collect in, and cooling-fin options for media temperatures up to 482°F.

Why standard pressure ports struggle with viscous media

Most pressure transmitters measure through a small-bore port that leads back to the sensing element. With water, oil or air, that design works well. With viscous, fibrous or curing media, the port becomes a trap. Material collects in the cavity, hardens or settles, and gradually isolates the sensing element from the process. The result can be sluggish response, incorrect readings or a fully blocked sensor.

The same cavity can also be difficult to clean. In processes that rely on clean-in-place (CIP) routines, any dead space where product can linger is undesirable.

How a flush mount pressure transmitter solves it

In the P13, the sensing diaphragm sits flush with the end of the process connection. Process media contacts the diaphragm directly, with no hollow pressure port in between. Material has nowhere to accumulate, and cleaning fluids reach the entire wetted surface during a CIP cycle.

  • Built for difficult media. The P13 is suited to viscous products such as polyurethane, glue and paint, to sludges and slurries, and to water and most other fluids.
  • Stainless throughout. Every wetted part, and the housing too, is 316L stainless steel.
  • Wide range coverage. Nineteen standard ranges span 0–1.5 psi up to 0–1,500 psi, and custom ranges can be built. Gauge, sealed gauge and absolute references can be specified.
  • Fast, repeatable signal. Response time is 1 ms or less, with ±0.5% FS typical accuracy and ±0.1% FS typical hysteresis and repeatability.
  • Vibration resistant. The P13 is rated for 20g sine vibration from 25 Hz to 2 kHz, and 7.5 grms random vibration from 5 Hz to 1 kHz.

Handling media temperatures up to 482°F

Hot process media presents a second challenge: heat conducted through the process connection can push the transmitter's electronics past their limits. The P13 addresses this with three body styles. Cooling fins between the process connection and the housing dissipate heat before it reaches the electronics.

Option Construction Media temperature range
6 No cooling fins -40 to 185°F (-40 to 85°C)
7 3 cooling fins -40 to 302°F (-40 to 150°C)
8 5 cooling fins -40 to 482°F (-40 to 250°C)

Choosing the shortest body that covers your maximum process temperature keeps the installation compact. On the 1/2" NPT version, the process end measures about 23 mm without fins, 47.5 mm with three fins and 57.5 mm with five, according to the datasheet drawings.

Outputs and electrical connection

The P13 is offered with six output signals, so it can match the input your controller or display already expects: 4–20 mA, 0–5 VDC, 0–10 VDC, 1–5 VDC, 1–10 VDC or 0.5–4.5 VDC. The 4–20 mA and 1–10 VDC versions accept a 12–30 VDC supply, and the other voltage outputs accept 12–24 VDC. Electrical connection is by a DIN 43650-A connector, and a field-wireable mating connector is included. If you would rather skip field wiring, pre-wired DIN cable assemblies (1, 3, 5, 7.5, 10 or 20 m) are quoted as separate items.

Applications

  • Viscous media, including polyurethane, adhesives and paints
  • Sludges and slurries
  • Sanitary and clean-in-place (CIP) processes
  • Water and most other fluids

Matching a P13 to your process

If your sanitary process calls for a tri-clamp connection rather than a threaded port, the P32 Pressure Transmitter with Tri-Clamp Connection offers 1.5" and 2" clamps for media up to 300°F. Paquin's complete pressure measurement lineup also includes diaphragm seals, gauges and switches.

Configuring a P13 comes down to five choices: pressure range, reference type, output signal, media temperature option and process thread. Describe your process and we will do the configuring. Request a quote from the P13 product page with the medium, its maximum temperature, your pressure range and the signal your controller needs, and Paquin will return a configured part number with pricing.
